The Best Pet-Friendly Flooring Options

Technical Expert Perspective · 10 March 2026

By The Flooring Centre Technical Team

Pets are not gentle on floors. Claws, accidents, dander, muddy paws after a walk around Albert Park — your flooring endures all of it, day after day, year after year. The good news is that contemporary flooring technology has advanced to a point where pet-household performance and genuine design quality no longer need to be mutually exclusive. Understanding what actually matters — and what the marketing copy tends to gloss over — will help you make a decision you won’t regret when you’re scrubbing at midnight.

Hardfloors: Understanding Scratch Resistance

The hardness of a wood floor, as measured by a Janka rating is NOT a measure for scratch resistance. A Janka rating simply measures the dent resistance of a timber when impacted.

The surface finish applied to the timber is the part that scratches. Equally, the surface of a water resistant laminate floor, or hybrid floor, or vinyl plank is equally what matters most when it comes to scratch resistance.

Of all the flooring types sold by The Flooring Centre, the hands down winner for pets is water resistant laminate.

Water resistant laminate delivers highest in class scratch resistance compared to other flooring types such as engineered timber and hybrid flooring. Not by just a bit either, by a very clear margin.

From a cleaning point of view, the aluminium oxide surface of a water resistant laminate floor is easier to clean and more robust to all manner of potential staining from a pet. With the modern levels of water resistance, water resistant laminate stands head and shoulders above the other options in this regard.

Carpet in Pet Households: Style and Fibre Selection Matter Enormously

Carpet is not the obvious choice for a pet household, but dismissing it entirely is a mistake. In bedrooms, home offices, and lower-traffic areas, carpet provides acoustic comfort, thermal insulation, and genuine cosiness that hard flooring cannot replicate.

The key is choosing the right style and fibre.

Triexta is the standout performer for pet households. Its stain resistance is a permanent structural property of the fibre — not a topical treatment that wears away — and it consistently outperforms nylon in independent stain resistance testing. For families with dogs or cats that have indoor accidents, Triexta represents significantly lower long-term risk and those pet accidents clean with just cold water!

The Bottom Line

The ideal pet-friendly floor does not exist as a single product. But the combination of a Triexta carpet and a water resistant laminate would most certainly be a solid combination. Homes with pets that look the best and perform the longest are those where these decisions were made deliberately, not defaulted to.

The Flooring Centre’s consultants work with pet households regularly (we have our own part time shop dog named Harvey at Nunawading) and understand the specific combinations that deliver results in the Australian climate and Australian homes.
